MARIJKE VAN WARMERDAM

MARIJKE VAN WARMERDAM: 'Rrrolle - red', 2011, film loop

Press release

'Rrrolle - red', 2011 / 'Rrrolle - blue', 2011
installation with two film loops at The Armory Show 2013

Marijke van Warmerdam is particularly well known for her film loops, which radiate a crystal clear simplicity. At The Armory Show 2013 film loops 'Rrrolle - red' and 'Rrrolle - blue' (2011) will each be simultaneously projected on a screen mounted on opposite walls of booth 736 of Galerie van Gelder. Art critic Klaus Biesenbach- currently director of PS1 Museum / Moma in New York - called her 'Loop-Guru' (in Frieze Magazine, Jan./Feb. 1999), being the first artist making use of film loops in the early nineties. The film loops of Marijke van Warmerdam are characterized by visual reduction, velocity, repetition and simplicity, and these traits can again be found here in her film installation she especially made for The Armory Show. At the front of the booth a film still on canvas touched up with mother of pearl paint and titled 'Blossom - butterfly' (2010) alludes with the relentlessly repeating movements of the roll-overs of the separately screened parrots inside the booth.

Born in The Netherlands in 1959, Marijke van Warmerdam had a residence in New York City in 1996 and 1997. Currently she lives and works in Amsterdam and Karlsruhe. She was represented in the biennials of Sydney, Berlin, Kwangju and Venice, among others. In 1997 she participated in Documenta X in Kassel. She has had retrospective exhibitions in the Van Abbemuseum in Eindhoven, Migros Museum in Zurich, ICA in Boston, Muhka in Antwerp, MAC in Marseille, The Fruitmarket in Edinburgh, IKON in Birmingham. In 2011 a retrospective show was held in Museum Boijmans van Beuningen in Rotterdam and in 2012 in Serralves Museum, Porto in Portugal. Next year a solo exhibition is scheduled in Kunsthalle Düsseldorf, Germany.
