For his exhibition 'Echo' in 2004 the New York artist Steel Stillman contrasts small black and white paintings on wood panels with large wall paintings of dots. In the black and white works details of furniture and interiors are abstracted to a flat plane, and yet maintain a strong sense of depth. In essence they constitute a kind of figurative "hard edge" in which primary references are replaced by a suggestive unexplained ambiguity. The wall paintings, which are being shown publicly for the first time, also represent aspects of space but on a much larger scale. They represent, for instance, a corner of an interior or a corridor and are built up of grey dots. These irregular arrays of dots make up abstract planes which tilt and curve into space. The contrast between the small black and white works and the enormous wall paintings make a sympathetic plea for the power of the large as well as the small. Steel Stillman has exhibited in the US and Europe since 1986. His artist book "Staring" was published in 2002 as a Galerie van Gelder Edition. His next artist book "There" was published earlier this year in 2004 by Onestar Press in Paris. |
